Overheating is one of the most common concerns raised by operators who use three phase oil immersed transformer and other types of distribution transformer units in daily power operations. Many users worry that continuous heat generation during operation will burn out the transformer. In fact, moderate heating is normal for working transformers. The key to safe operation is mastering the standard allowable temperature range and understanding how excessive heat impacts equipment service life.

During regular operation, power loss occurring in the core and windings of a three phase oil immersed transformer is converted into heat energy, which gradually raises the internal temperature. The transformer maintains stable working conditions when heat generation and heat dissipation reach a dynamic balance. It is worth noting that temperatures vary greatly in different internal parts. The winding delivers the highest temperature, followed by the iron core, while the transformer oil stays the coolest. For unified operation monitoring, industry regulations uniformly take the top-layer oil temperature as the core judging standard for distribution transformer operating status.

The allowable temperature of oil-immersed transformers is determined by their internal winding insulation materials. Most conventional power transformers adopt Class A insulation. Under the maximum ambient temperature of 40°C specified by industry standards, the ultimate operating temperature of transformer windings is capped at 105°C. Since the average winding temperature is about 10°C higher than the top oil temperature, the maximum allowable top oil temperature is set at 95°C to avoid insulation damage.

In actual on-site operation, professionals always control the top oil temperature below 85°C to slow down oil oxidation and aging. For three phase oil immersed transformer equipped with forced oil circulation, water cooling or air cooling systems, the long-term stable operating temperature should not exceed 75°C, ensuring optimal heat dissipation efficiency.

Long-term over-temperature operation brings irreversible damage to all distribution transformer equipment. There is a clear industry-recognized temperature aging rule: the transformer service life is reduced by half for every 8°C temperature rise beyond the standard range. For reference, a transformer operating stably at 95°C can serve 20 years, while its lifespan drops to only 7 years at 105°C and merely 2 years at 120°C. Excessive temperature accelerates insulation aging severely, easily causing winding insulation breakdown and permanent equipment burnout.

As a professional manufacturer, Zhejiang Hengli Electrical recommends all users monitor transformer oil temperature in real time. Strictly controlling operating temperature within the standard range is the most cost-effective way to extend the service life and ensure long-term stable operation of three phase oil immersed transformer and distribution transformer equipment.
